Estilo de canto a capella estadounidense que incorpora varios himnos folclóricos y usa una notación musical especial.

La escala de siete notas usada por algunos cantantes se canta sin usar las sílabas"do-re-mi-fa-sol-la-si, sino un sistema de cuatro sílabas llevado a América del Norte por los primeros colonos ingleses:"fa-sol-la-fa-sol-la-mi. El sistema refleja el hecho de que se repite una serie de tres intervalos dentro de la escala mayor. En la partitura se usa una cabeza de nota de forma diferente para cada una de las cuatro sílabas. El cantante lee la música siguiendo esas formas, pero los cantantes que no conocen el sistema pueden leer las notas de acuerdo con su ubicación en la pauta. La tradición se inició en Nueva Inglaterra y se difundió por el sur y el oeste a medida que llegaban a EE.UU. expresiones musicales más sofisticadas. En la década de 1880 este sistema de canto se había extinguido, excepto en ciertas áreas rurales, pero ha experimentado un resurgimiento en los últimos años. El himnario "shape-note tradicional, The Sacred Harp, publicado por primera vez en 1844, todavía está en uso.
